Weekend Fires Damage Homes In Greenville And Renova

GREENVILLE & RENOVA, MS (Ben Caxton) — A pair of fires in the early morning hours Saturday damaged Delta area homes. In Greenville just after 2:00 am Engine 1, Rescue 7, Engine 4, Command 1 and 2 were all dispatched to 516 Beckwith Street for a residential fire. The first units on the scene reported heavy fire and smoke from the wooden frame shotgun structure. The Greenville Fire Department reportedly had the fire under control and out within a few minutes. Once the fire was out a search of the residence turned up a mid-size pit pull dog lying on the kitchen floor near the back door. Firefighters rescued the dog putting in the back of one of the command pickup trucks beds. The residence sustained heavy fire and water damage to the porch and living room areas and heavy smoke damage to the rest of the residence. The cause of that fire is still under investigation. At about the same time a Renova home went up in flames. Fire officials there told Delta Daily News they believe that blaze was started by a lightning strike. It took several hours for crews to put out the fire, and the home was a total loss. The family was out of town at the time of the fire.
