Vicksburg Hospital Demolition Begins Wednesday

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — Vicksburg officials are holding a celebration Wednesday – to mark the beginning of demolition of the old Kuhn Memorial Hospital buildings. Mayor George Flaggs told the Vicksburg Board of Alderman Monday that the contractors for the $750,000 project have completed the removal of hazardous materials, including lead paint and asbestos from the site, and will start knocking things down this week. The city-owned hospital building was funded and operated by the state of Mississippi as a charity hospital until 1989. Since that time various proposals to repurpose the structure were made but never realized. Flaggs says a brief ceremony will be held to mark the start of demolition at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.
