The Greenville Historic Preservation Commission is seeking to regain the Certified Local Government status lost a few years ago

The city lost the Certified Local Government status over an ordinance passed in 2012 which allowed property owners to opt-out if they didn’t want to be part of the historic district. The opt-out clause did not meet the guidelines for the status, which allows for certain benefits and tax breaks. The Greenville Historic Preservation Commission is now looking into reverting to a 2008 ordinance which did not include the opt-out clause.
