Over 30 Shootings on Memphis Freeways and Counting

MEMPHIS, TN (Ben Caxton) — There have been over 30 shootings on Memphis freeways this year; no one was injured in the latest a week ago on I-240 but Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland says enough is enough. Now The Tennessee Highway Patrol has announced an operation to reduce gun violence on Memphis’ interstates. Memphis police, the Shelby County Sheriff and THP are stepping up enforcement on those busy roadways and “Operation Grizzly Bear 2019” is a six-week operation that will target crime, aggressive drivers and violence on Memphis interstates. Officers will patrol targeted areas along I-240 and Highway 385 from noon through the early morning hours in marked and unmarked vehicles. U.S. Attorney Mike Dunavant is also looking into federal laws involving interstate commerce – federal laws carry a heavier punishment on such crimes.
