No Blues Marker for Lynyrd Skynyrd

GILLSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — The 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed three members of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd may someday be commemorated with a marker, but it won’t be a Mississippi Blues Trail Marker. The marker was pitched to the Mississippi Blues Commission last month and sent to a panel of ‘blues scholars’ that evaluate submissions. They recommended a historical marker but said the Blues Trail is not the right way to commemorate the crash because Skynyrd is not a ‘blues’ band. Band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, a road manager, the pilot, and co-pilot were all killed in the crash on October 20, 1977. News reports stated that the proposed Blues Trail Marker would be placed near the crash site on Highway 569 in Gillsburg.
