ROLLING FORK, Miss.–A man who describes himself as a “proud son of the Delta” is challenging Sen. Roger Wicker to a debate. Ty Pinkins was unopposed in a predictable primary election Tuesday, in which Donald Trump and Pres. Joe Biden, each won their respective Republican and Democratic primaries.
“While my opponent might have a financial advantage, our strength lies in something far more potent than money. It lies in the spirit of Mississippians,” said Pinkins, in a victory speech on YouTube. “This is in stark contrast to the outdated, regressive money-driven politics that my opponent represents.”
Wicker easily won his Republican nomination to keep his U.S. Senate seat, defeating Col. Ghannon Burton and Dan Eubanks.
Pinkins was running for Senate before taking a short break to run for Secretary of State following the sudden withdrawal of the Democratic candidate last year.
“Senator Wicker, I am challenging you to a debate in each of Mississippi’s four Congressional districts,” said Pinkins.
As far as those Congressional districts go, as with Wicker, there is little reason to expect change in the makeup of the Mississippi delegation. Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson will face a Republican challenger. But, that will depend on the outcome of a runoff election between Ron Eller and Andrew Smith, neither of which got more than 50 percent of the vote in a primary where the turnout was relatively low.
