Lawmakers Draw Up Christmas Budget Wish List

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Top Mississippi lawmakers have made early recommendations for the budget year that begins July 1st. The Joint Legislative Budget Committee met this week and adopted a broad outline for a $6.1 billion spending plan that’s about 1 percent smaller than the current budget. Governor Phil Bryant has recommended a teacher pay raise but leaders will decide later whether to consider raises for teachers and state government employees. The initial plan recommends a slight decrease in funding for all levels of education from kindergarten through universities but proposes a small increase for new Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers.
