Late start date a no-go

Local school districts will not have to start the 2014 – 2015 school year in late August, after the Governor signed a bill that negates a previous law that would have required the school year to start no earlier than the third Monday in August. Tourism officials had called for a later start to the school year, saying it would give families more time for summer vacation and therefore provide a boost for local economies that thrive on tourism. The governor’s signature negates that law and school districts can now start at any time in August. They still have to hold at least 180 school days per year.
