Historic Greenwood Bank Building Sees New Life

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — A historic Greenwood bank building, is getting new life, as a bank yet again. The Greenwood Commonwealth Newspaper reports that the Wilson Banking Co. building at the corner of Howard and Market streets downtown will become home to a new branch of Guaranty Bank & Trust Co. of Mississippi in the coming months. Real estate firm Powers Properties will be holding an open house at the 1916 Beaux Arts-inspired building on Thursday. Architectural details of the old bank building include stained glass windows, elaborate concrete cartouches and plaster capitals and bases, and a main entrance that cuts diagonally across the corner between two streets. Guaranty will lease the first-floor for three years. The top floor is occupied by offices of the building’s owners, Greenwood lawyers Webb Franklin, Sam Fonda and Tom Flanagan. Guaranty hopes the new branch to be fully in service by August.
