High School Player Who Collapsed at Game Dies

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — The high school football player who collapsed on the sidelines at a Friday night football game in Coahoma County has died. 16-year-old Byhalia High School Sophomore Dennis Mitchell was standing on the sidelines in the second quarter when he fell face-first and then began shaking according to a report in the Clarksdale Press-Register newspaper. Parents, coaches, and emergency workers all worked to revive the 5-foot-11-inch, 260-pound Mitchell before he was lifted onto a stretcher and taken by ambulance to Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale. He was pronounced dead a short time later at 8:40 PM by Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith, who said Mitchell had no prior health problems and heat was not a factor.
