Full House At Clarksdale City Board Meeting

CLARKSDALE, MS (Paul Wilson) — The gallery was full as Clarksdale’s city board met yesterday, and in his first meeting, Mayor Chuck Espy broke three tie votes among the commissioners. In all three cases, the board voted along racial lines. The first was to repeal Ordinance 1043, which prohibits parking cars on the lawns of private residences. In opposing the repeal, Commissioners Plunk and Murphy noted that overturning the law would reduce property values and ultimately raise taxes. The second tie vote was over giving the new mayor’s administrative assistant a 20 percent raise and the third was to post openings for three department heads. In a 30-minute executive session, the board voted to replace long-time fire chief Obert Douglas and city attorney Curtis Boschert, naming C.W. Grayson interim fire chief and Larry Lewis interim city attorney.
