Former Oxford Sheriff’s Son Wins Election for Dad’s Job

OXFORD, MS (Ben Caxton) — On Tuesday Lafayette County voters elected Oxford Police Department Chief Joey East to serve Lafayette County Sheriff. East beat challenger Jeff South with 82 percent of the vote in the sheriff’s race. His father Buddy died last fall after serving as sheriff for 46 years. Joey East has been Oxford’s Police Chief for six years but took a leave of absence when he decided to enter the sheriff’s race. Oxford is one of the fastest-growing areas in the state, and East will be sworn in as sheriff in January.
