Former Mayor Question Clarksdale Tax Scheme

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — In a front-page story this week the Clarksdale Press-Register reports that the city will use a sales tax diversion to pay for the proposed Corey Moore Town Center and Sportsplex project. The Mississippi Development Authority has approved taking 80 percent of the sales tax generated within the project’s 108 acres for up to 15 years to repay developers and cover the city’s cost for infrastructure, but former Clarksdale mayor John Mayo raised questions about the project and its funding in a letter to the editor in the same edition, calling on the Governor to investigate the project’s investors and feasibility of the project.
