Delayed Emergency Repairs Ordered for Old Vicksburg Bridge

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — Roller bearings that support some of the largest spans on the old Vicksburg Mississippi River bridge have run out of room and that means some unexpected repairs are needed on the structure. The bearings allow the main spans to expand and contract in the heat of the day and apparently the gap between the bridge sections to allow for that expansion is down to just one inch along one side which could lead to damage. Exp[ansion joints on other bridge piers have been replaced over the years. The most recent issue was discovered in March and will cost over $900,000 to fix.
