Child Dies After Being Hit Boarding School Bus

TUPELO, MS (Ben Caxton) — A Lee County child died after he was hit at a school bus stop Wednesday morning in Lee County. Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green identified the child as 9-year-old Dalen Thomas. Baldwyn Elementary School officials say the bus was properly stopped with four children on board when the truck, driven by 22-year-old Hunter Newman, of Marietta, hit the student who was trying to board the bus. The boy was first taken by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, then airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN, where he later died from his injuries. Newman was charged with one count of aggravated assault and his bond set at $10,000. The crash remains under investigation.
