Would You Like Some Motor Oil with Your Fries?

OXFORD, MS (Ben Caxton) — Robots are taking over the Ole Miss campus to deliver lunch. 30 six-wheeled autonomous robots began delivering meals Wednesday. Foodservice employees put the food inside the robot that’s outfitted with insulated bags and sends it away. With 10 cameras and sensors around the outside, the robot automatically stops for people, cars and at crosswalks until it’s clear to move. Moving at about four miles per hour, the robot locks its cargo and delivers to your location anywhere on campus that you set within a mobile app. The customer unlocks the lid then, takes out the food, closes the lid and off it goes again. The robots deliver food in 10 to 15 minutes, and winter weather isn’t a problem. Ole Miss is one of just ten campuses in the US with the robots but Starship Technologies plans to expand to 100 campuses in the coming years.
