Vicksburg Grant To Aid Removing Blighted Houses

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — Vicksburg’s Mayor and Board of Alderman are applying for a grant to help clean up dilapidated buildings around Vicksburg. The city can apply for up to $4M from the Mississippi Housing Corp. who obtained the money originally from the Mississippi State Treasury. The idea is to demolish any structures on the property and then pay the landowner to buy the property back, then turn it over to groups like Habitat for Humanity to build new affordable housing for area residents. In a normal situation, the city would remove the structure but then file a tax lien against the property for the cost.
