Vicksburg Facing Staff Shortage at Police HQ

Chicot Memorial

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — In the midst of a wave of violence Vicksburg is facing a police shortage. The Vicksburg Police are supposed to be comprised of 81 officers. But there are currently only 61. Officials cite a number of issues that have made it difficult to hire new recruits including a lack of money for recruiting and retainment and pay rates. The city currently pays $14.50 an hour but has begun advertising the starting wage at $14.75 to spur interest. The shortage of officers comes at a particularly bad time for Vicksburg as the city has seen more than a dozen shootings and eight homicides so far this year, compared to just five all of last year.
