Vermont Inmates Now Being Held in Coahoma County

COAHOMA COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — A private prison near Clarksdale has some new clients this week. 215 Vermont inmates have now been moved from an overcrowded Pennsylvania state prison to Coahoma County. The inmates were moved after complaints about treatment, medical care and several inmate deaths at the Camp Hill prison. Camp Hill didn’t use Vermont’s disciplinary system, which restricts the maximum amount of time in disciplinary segregation to 30 days. The Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, run by CoreCivic, will use Vermont’s system. Prisoners’ rights advocates though say the move puts even more distance between inmates and their Vermont families.
