Unpaid Garbage Bills to Lead to Water Cut off

LEFLORE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Facing a flood of people underwater on their garbage bills the Leflore County Supervisors have voted to do something about it. Turn off water service to the delinquents. The new plan will see a $9.50 charge for garbage pickup added to water utility bills for the roughly 1,800 residential customers of East Leflore Water and Sewer District. Past due refuse charges will be added to the bills, and people will have until December 10 to pay or face having their water service suspended. The county will pay the district $1 per month per customer to have the bills combined. The county says it is owed well over $1 million in unpaid fees, averaging around $25,000 every month that currently goes uncollected.
