Unemployment Steady at 4.9%

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Mississippi’s unemployment rate held steady at 4.9% from March to April. The state department of employment security reports the rate has now been below 5% for nineteen months in a row send is the third lowest level of unemployment ever recorded in Mississippi. April’s rate is one-tenth of a percentage point higher than a year ago; in April 2018 the rate was 4.8%. Mississippi’s non-farm jobs rose by 3000 in April to 1,164,200, the most jobs ever recorded in Mississippi. Since April 2018, the number of jobs in the state increased by 11,200 and the number of Mississippians working fell by 2300 in April to 1,203,900. In the year since April 2018, employed individuals decreased by 11,600.
