UMMC In Jackson Terminates 195 Employees

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — A $24 Million budget shortfall through the end of the fiscal year has forced the elimination of 85 positions and termination of 195 employees at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. UMMC announced the cuts in a press conference Thursday. They said that unanticipated reductions to patient care reimbursement and other revenues totals $32 million dollars less income than expected. “Unfortunately, it was not possible to reach savings of this magnitude without reductions in staffing,” said Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine. Woodward made clear that the plan devised would not negatively impact patient experience or academic integrity. UMMC says the positions terminated today were all spread proportionately across the organization and in addition to these cuts, a number of faculty took pay reductions.
