Two Years in the Hoosegow for Court Embezzler

PHILADELPHIA, MS (Ben Caxton) — The former municipal court clerk of Philadelphia has been sentenced to two years in prison and five years of probation after she was convicted of embezzlement. Karen Refre manipulated accounting software to steal more than $11,000 from the city over two years. She was arrested by agents from the state auditor’s office in August after a grand jury indicted her. State Auditor Shad White’s office recovered the entire amount of Refre’s demand, including investigative costs, by filing a claim against her surety bond. Neshoba County Circuit Court Judge Mark Duncan has ordered Refre to reimburse the surety bond company.
