CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — The group building a new Trump branded Scion Hotel in Cleveland has filed for as much as $6M in tax breaks Chawla Hotels CEO Dinish Chawla revealed on Friday. The application, filed with the Mississippi Development Authority is worth up to 30 percent of eligible construction costs. Chawla said his company has already secured discounts on local city and county taxes. Despite the fact that President Trump handed management control of his companies to his two adult sons before he took office last year the hotel deal has drawn complaints that government officials and local real estate partners might offer special favors to the president’s business to curry favor with him. The result has been several lawsuits that allege he is violating the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution forbidding presidents from accepting gifts or payments from foreign or domestic governments. The new hotel is expected to cost $20 million and will be the first in Trump’s new chain.
