Three Life Sentences for Monticello Double Murderer

Chicot Memorial

MONTICELLO, AR (Ben Caxton) — A double-murder trial in Drew County ended Friday with the sentencing 40-year-old Lavar Thompson of Dermott to three life terms, plus fifty years, to run consecutively, meaning he’ll never be released from custody. Thompson shot and killed the front-seat passenger, and wounded the driver, from the backseat of a car that was taking him home from a local club on January 10, 2016. When the driver fled to call the police he stole the car, drove away, and shortly later broke into another home where he got in bed with the sleeping residents, shot and killed one of them, before being disarmed and shot by the other. Following the jury’s recommendation in imposing the sentence, the judge told Thompson “You didn’t just kill one person, you killed two people, and tried to kill a third.” Had Thompson been found guilty of capital murder, instead of first-degree murder in the deaths he would have faced the death penalty in Arkansas.
