The Skinny On Mississippi Children’s Weights

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — New data shows Mississippi children may be getting skinnier. A report from advocacy group Trust for America’s Health analyzed data from a federal government survey and shows Mississippi’s kids are third-fattest at 37 percent, behind Tennessee at 37.7 percent and North Dakota at 37.1 percent. Only 19.2 percent of Utah children were overweight or obese. Mississippi’s childhood obesity rate was 39.7 percent in 2011 and 44.4 percent in 2007. Seven of ten states with the highest obesity rates are in the South but overall childhood obesity has stopped rising over the last decade.
