The IRS is warning Mississippi residents about a phone scam in which callers claim that you owe back taxes and must pay immediately to avoid arrest

The callers often use a common last name and offer a fake IRS badge number, and they often choose recent immigrants as victims. The callers demand that money be paid promptly to a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. Sometimes another caller will say they are from a local police department and are verifying the call, and the caller ID will be rigged to support the claim. The IRS has launched an education campaign to warn people about the scam and not to fall for it.
