Study Says Mississippi Dependent on Uncle Sam

WASHINGTON, DC (Ben Caxton) — A new study ranks Mississippi as the third-most dependent state on federal support. The personal finance website WalletHub looked at three key metrics: return on taxes paid to the federal government, federal funding as a share of state revenue and share of federal jobs. Red States are generally more reliant on federal money than Blue States, and there is a 63.3 percent correlation between a state’s federal dependency and its per-capita gross domestic product which means least wealthy states tend to receive the most federal support. With the nation’s highest tax rates, Illinois is the third least federally dependent state while New Mexico, Kentucky and Mississippi have the highest dependence on federal assistance.
