Stretch Of Us 82 Named for Plane Crash Victims

ITTA BENA, MS (Ben Caxton) — If you’re traveling between Greenville and Greenwood, you’ll soon need to take Highway Yanky 72. Yanky 72 was the call sign of the marine transport that crash in a field near Itta Bena last summer killing all 16 onboard. On Wednesday, Governor Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2485 which officially names a portion of US Highway 82 from Leflore County to the Sunflower County line where the plane went down in a soybean field. The renaming of the highway coincides with an earlier announced plan by the department of Mississippi’s Marine Corps League to spend $80,000 to erect a monument to the fallen troops on a site along the highway near Itta Bena.
