Steele Bayou Gates Closed Again

WARREN COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Rising water levels on the Mississippi River have caused the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to close the flood control gates at the Steele Bayou Control Structure near Vicksburg. Heavy rainfall over the last week contributed to the decision which will see the corps’ Emergency Operations Center spring into action to increase monitoring of everything from levees, floodwalls and pumping stations to rainfall amounts to determine if conditions warrant further action. An above flood-stage crest on the Mississippi is forecast to spread downstream through Greenville, Vicksburg and Natchez over the next week or two.
