State’s Anti-Gay Law Cost Pascagoula Christening of USS Portland

(Pascagoula)– Add Pascagoula ship christening to Mississippi traditions under threat over the state’s new harsh anti-gay law. In his role as Secretary of the Navy, former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus has shifted the christening of the USS Portland from Pascagoula where it was built its namesake city of Portland, Oregon. Portland Mayor Charlie Hales cancelled his trip to Mississippi as well saying “I will not travel to a state that legalizes bigotry.”
