State Moves More Inmates out Of Parchman

PARCHMAN, MS (Ben Caxton) — More inmates are being transferred out of the state prison at Parchman. About 50 prisoners were moved Wednesday to the privately-run Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility; during the next few weeks over 500 more will be moved, leaving only death row inmates and prisoners who perform maintenance work in Parchman’s Unit 29. Governor Tate Reeves says closing Unit 29 is a short-term solution. State officials are considering options including reopening a closed prison in Walnut Grove.
