Sheriff Apologizes for Racist Text

TUPELO, MS (Ben Caxton) — The Lee County NAACP says they have received an apology from Sheriff Jim Johnson for a racist text message he sent in 2017 that was recently uncovered in a public records request by a local newspaper. Branch President Chris Traylor declined to reveal the contents of the letter until after members had a chance to vote on whether they would accept Johnson’s apology. The NAACP had also asked that the county reprimand Johnson for his message which called a Hispanic lawmaker “worse than a black person” but supervisors have said they will not do so, according to local newspaper reports.
