School Delay Possible Amid North Bolivar Merger Uncertainty

BOLIVAR COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — With just a month before school starts one Delta district isn’t sure whether it will have one high school or two. The North Bolivar District wants to merge Shelby’s Broad Street High School and Mound Bayou’s John F. Kennedy High School and have students attend North Side High School in the current Shelby school building. District officials say enrollment is declining and they can’t afford expensive repairs that are needed at all school buildings. Supporters of the Mound Bayou school sued to block the merger and a ruling has been delayed. Superintendent Maurice Smith says the district is trying to plan for contingencies, but the start of school may be delayed as the district still has a large number of teaching vacancies.

  1. Here’s hoping with all my heart that the school in Mound Bayou can remain open since it means so much to that city!! I attended all my school years there having been born and raised there. Education has always been one of that city’s first priorities.
