Saturday USM Football Match Canceled Due to Hurricane Florence

BOONE, NC (Ben Caxton) — The University of Southern Mississippi’s Saturday football match against Appalachian State has been canceled due to the threat of Hurricane Florence. The category 4 storm is expected to make landfall in the Carolinas as a major hurricane on Friday, and states of emergency have been declared in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC ahead of the storm. More than 1 million have been ordered to evacuate low-lying areas in the region. Kickoff for the game was scheduled for 2:30 PM. Although Boone is not near the coast and weather Saturday afternoon may not have been bad, as the storm moves in weather conditions there are expected to deteriorate rapidly with heavy rains and gusty winds moving in that would have been dangerous for people trying to leave the stadium after the game had been played. No date has yet been announced to reschedule the contest.
