Relatives Of Dead Campaign Activist Suing Mayor And Police

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — The 2014 Republican Senate primary in Mississippi saw tea-party challenger Chris McDaniel narrowly lose to the eventual winner of the seat, long-serving Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran. Mark Mayfield, a supporter of McDaniel’s later took his own life, and his family blames dirty politics for his suicide. Mayfield was tied to the unauthorized online publication of a photo of Cochran’s wife, Rose, who was living in a nursing home with dementia. A blogger pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge and spent several months in jail. But local police with the help of the mayor and a law firm supporting Cochran helped bring felony charges against Mayfield for “conspiracy to exploit a vulnerable adult.” His widow and sons filed a lawsuit this week that alleges his life was ruined in 2014 when he was charged with the felony which led to him ultimately taking his own life.
