Prisoner Found Dead in Central Mississippi Jail

PEARL, MS (Ben Caxton) — The Mississippi Department of Corrections announced Friday that an inmate died in custody last week. 20-year-old Darrell Harper was found unresponsive Tuesday at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility near Pearl, according to MDOC. Harper was serving a 5-year prison sentence for residential burglary. 16 inmates died in the prison system during the month of August prompting investigations. Harper’s death is the first reported since then. Harper’s body has been taken for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
