Police Eye-in-the-sky Coming to Vicksburg

Chicot Memorial

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — Sometime in the next 2-1/2 months Vicksburg will become one of just a handful of Mississippi cities with a police presence in the sky. The Mayor and Board of Alderman received and accepted a certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration last week allowing the local police department to fly a drone over the city at altitudes below 400 feet. Four officers have been training to fly the craft. With permission in hand now Police Chief Milton Moore told the Vicksburg Post newspaper that they’ll be purchasing the flyer before the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. He told the paper they plan to use the device for crowd control at festivals like Riverfest and the flea market, to check out suspicious people or vehicles, or to survey an area and make sure situations are safe to send in officers.
