Parchman Guard Accused Of Helping Escapees

Chicot Memorial

PARCHMAN, MS (Ben Caxton) — Both inmates who escaped from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman this week are back in custody. 22-year-old Ryan Young was captured Wednesday in Mound Bayou about 15 miles west of the prison and 41-year old James Sanders was caught Tuesday night in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. The Sunflower County Sheriff’s Department says they are holding 35-year-old Nicole Romero of Drew for Conspiracy in the escape of the two men. Romero is a guard at Parchman. Bond has been set at 50 thousand dollars. Corrections officials are investigating how the men escaped and whether others could face criminal charges for helping. Sanders was convicted of murder in 2000 and sentenced to life in prison. Young was serving 40 years after being convicted of burglary, grand larceny and illegal gun possession in 2015.
