Only 1 Of 3 Proposed Leflore Charter Schools Advances

LEFLORE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Only one of three proposed Leflore County charter schools has advanced to the final approval round. Leflore Legacy Academy will now hold public hearings and be evaluated a final time by the state’s Charter Schools Authorizer Board before a final decision on being granted a license is made September 10th. The proposed school, headed by Dr. Tamala Boyd Shaw of Mississippi Delta Academies would be a college preparatory school which would serve sixth through eighth-grade students. Two other local proposals were rejected by evaluators for reasons ranging from to staffing structure and disciplinary plans to negative income projections. Also approved to proceed for further review were two Jackson and one Canton school. Mississippi law allows privately operated charter schools to open funded with taxpayer money, so no admission is charged students to attend, but they must meet the same academic and accountability requirements as traditional public schools.
