Ole Miss Sends Candygram To Landshark: You Win!

OXFORD, MS (Ben Caxton) — The Landshark will replace the black bear as the on-field mascot at Ole Miss. University of Mississippi Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter made the announcement on Friday, a week after students voted to make the change. The nickname for athletic teams remains the Rebels, but Ole Miss retired Colonel Reb from the sidelines in 2003 because critics saw the bearded old man as reminiscent of a plantation owner. Some still demanded the return of Colonel Reb but despite removing Old South symbols, Vitter said that the school’s nickname “always will be” the Rebels. The Landshark comes from a celebratory hand signal that Ole Miss athletes started using in 2008.
