Old Vicksburg Bridge Supporters Pack Supervisors Meeting

Chicot Memorial

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — The Vicksburg Post reported yesterday from the Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting that the room was packed. Standing room only. The reason? Supporters of an effort in town that’s gaining momentum to have the 88-year-old Vicksburg Mississippi River bridge opened for pedestrian and bike use. Currently, the span is used only for rail traffic and opened to other uses for special events. A group calling itself “Friends of the Old Vicksburg Bridge” wants a resolution from the board to open the bridge year-round. The 1.6-mile span is actually owned by Warren County and managed by the five-member bridge commission. It was closed to vehicles in 1998 by Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development safety concerns.

We should open the Bridge for year-round pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The Bridge has safely hosted many events in which hundreds of people have crossed the Bridge by foot or on bike. These events have included several each year including some within the last 12 months.
Railroad tracks run through pedestrian areas all over the country. The tracks presence on the Bridge posses no greater risk than anywhere else.
