Old Vicksburg Bridge Closed After Being Hit by 30 Barges

Chicot Memorial

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — The old Mississippi River Bridge in Vicksburg was closed to train traffic yesterday after a tow pushing 30 barges downriver struck one of the bridges piers. The towboat, the Jeffrey G based in St. Louis, crashed into the bridge’s number four pier on the Louisiana side of the river. At least two of the barges, reportedly carrying grain, sunk after the collision. But according to the Coast Guard, no hazardous materials were released and no one on the tow or barges went overboard. A local towboat caught up with and secured the loose barges and an engineer is on the way to inspect the bridge for damage.
