No More Free Ride for Greenville Festivals?

GREENVILLE, MS (Ben Caxton) — Caught in a tightening budget squeeze the city of Greenville is considering ending free police protection for local festivals. Currently, the city does not charge promoters but racks up large overtime bills for officers charged with making sure the events go off safely. Mayor Errick Simmons said at a recent council meeting that the practice needs to be reviewed and possibly amended by charging a nominal fee for police services. Other council members expressed concerns over how the charges would be calculated.
