New West Nile Cases Include Washington County

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — The state department of health has confirmed eight more cases of West Nile virus, bringing this year’s total to 21. The new cases are in Adams, Calhoun, Forrest, Jones, Hines, Madison and Washington counties. Mississippi reported 63 West Nile cases and two deaths in 2017. The peak months for the mosquito-borne illness are July to December but only about 3 in 10 infected people develop flu-like illness and less than 1 percent develop dangerous brain or nervous system infections.
