CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — New wayfinding and public parking signs are being installed around Cleveland this week. The idea for the signage is part of a master plan developed by Team Cleveland Main Street in 2014. Their data indicated that many drivers who pass by on Highway 61 were unaware of downtown Cleveland and other attractions available to visitors. As evidence, an analysis indicated that only 22% of downtown shoppers were from outside of Bolivar County, while 71% of shoppers at retailers on Hwy 61 hailed from out-of-town. Capturing even a portion of that traffic would be a big boost to downtown retailers according to Judson Thigpen, Executive Director of the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce. A total of eleven signs will direct visitors to points of interest around town with six more indicating spaces available for public parking.
