New Sheriff Appointed in Tallahatchie County

TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Tallahatchie County supervisors have appointed Jimmy Fly to serve as sheriff until next year’s general election. Fly was a sheriff’s deputy before he was elected justice court judge in 2015. Former sheriff William Brewer resigned last week after he was arrested on conspiracy and extortion charges. Federal prosecutors allege Brewer took bribes for 15 years to protect an unnamed drug dealer. The FBI says it converted the drug dealer into an informant in June and recorded the informant telling Brewer of fake plans to rob another drug dealer. The FBI also says the informant paid Brewer $10,000 in FBI-tracked bribes.
