New Higher Penalties for Reckless Work Zone Drivers

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — A new Mississippi law that took effect July 1st increases penalties for reckless drivers in work zones by allowing allows contractors to hire law enforcement officers to monitor work zones and crack down on people who don’t obey speed limits in those zones. State transportation officials believe the new law will provide more safety for workers in road construction zone where they are close to moving traffic. Authorities believe the presence of law enforcement will make motorists take precautions when they see orange barrels and flashing lights.
