Museum Tour This Tuesday In Monticello

MONTICELLO, AR (Ben Caxton) — A Christmas tradition continues this year in Monticello. Next Tuesday is the city’s Christmas parade which starts at 6:00 PM downtown. And afterward, the Drew County Historical Museum opens its doors for what has become an annual event, the Candlelight Tour. The museum is housed in the historic Cavaness House located at 404 South Main Street. The Southern Colonial Revival mansion was built over a ten year period from 1906 to 1916, by Garvin Cavaness, a descendant of early settlers of Drew County. The 2-1/2 story building is built of concrete blocks that were custom-molded on site by Cavaness, reputedly using cement he recovered when hired to clean up spilled cement from derailed railroad cars. The Drew County Historical Society acquired the mansion in 1970.
