GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — A series of shootings struck Greenwood from Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning. In the first incident 35-year-old, Ernest Williams was shot dead by two men who approached his car while he was dropping off a passenger at the Bishop Apartments. At 1:40 AM Greenwood Police responding to a report of shots fired in the 700 block of Avenue I arrived to find a house riddled with bullet holes. Police say the house was occupied at the time, but no one was hurt. While investigating police heard more gunshots just before 3:00 AM. The gunfire came from the vicinity of McLaurin Street and Avenue H where they discovered a car full of bullet holes with a female passenger inside who had been shot twice in the back. That victim was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and is reported in stable condition. Investigations into the shootings led Greenwood Police to a home on “F” Avenue where 10 people were taken into custody as “persons of interest”. Charges have yet to be filed but four long guns, three handguns, and ammunition that matched the shell casings recovered at both shooting scenes and other evidence were confiscated according to Greenwood Chief of Police Ray Moore.
